As part of this joint project, a new concept for future mobile machinery is being investigated and demonstrated. The core of the concept consists of balancing a machine on two wheels, which is being tested using a wheel loader as an example. This wheel loader is characterized by a compact design and a low dead weight, which leads to a reduced energy requirement.
Thanks to the lower dead weight, energy savings of up to 40% are expected compared to conventional electrically powered wheel loaders. The machine is much more maneuverable than conventional wheel loaders, which makes it easier to transport. It can drive on two wheels like a Segway, which offers advantages when used indoors, on tight inner-city construction sites, in gardening and landscaping and in tunnel construction.
This concept facilitates entry into the zero-emission construction site of the future and supports CO2 reduction targets. In the long term, the concept promotes the transition to autonomous operation and drives robotization. The main objective of the project is to validate the concept by building a demonstrator vehicle and proving its functionality on a prepared test site.
The hydraulics are being developed and their control system designed at the Mobile Machinery branch of the institute. At the same time, a simulation model is being created to validate core functions at an early stage and minimize project risks.
