CENTER FOR HOLISTIC RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABLE TRAMTRAIN INTEGRATION FOR NEXT-GEN AUTOMATION
***ENGLISH VERSION BELOW***
Problemstellung

Problem Statement
The development of new technologies requires that the new product be tested under real-world conditions before it is launched on the market. Testing in a real-world system is often time-consuming, as the implementation of the necessary requirements involves numerous approvals. This problem is particularly significant in the railway sector, where strict regulations apply and the availability of rolling stock is limited. Furthermore, tests must be conducted in a controlled and safe environment—which further restricts testing options.

Solution
CHRISTINA operates a specialized test center for trams and trains in Karlsruhe that is unique in Germany. The test environment utilizes existing railway infrastructure and includes various scenarios, such as railroad crossings, urban traffic, a train station, and a bridge. In addition, a tram-train with an open interface is available to facilitate component testing. CHRISTINA is the open tram-train test center for research and development under real-world conditions.

Summary
Automation and innovation in the rail sector are often associated with significant delays. Validation under real-world operating conditions is complex and requires a great deal of time and coordination. Challenges include finding a suitable test environment and obtaining numerous permits to conduct the tests. Consequently, the pace of innovation is slowed more by structural and regulatory barriers than by technological capabilities. CHRISTINA removes barriers to innovation by providing a real-world, comprehensive tram-train test environment in Karlsruhe.
